Traditional Gujarati dhokla just got a wholesome upgrade. Made with split yellow moong dal instead of besan (gram flour), this version is full of flavor, easy to digest, and super satisfying. Whether you prepare food, snacks, or entertainment, this healthy turning point in classics earns minds every time (and taste receptors).

Why is Moongdal Dhokla worthy of the weekly menu space?

This is the business: Healthy Moong Dal Dhokla is a power plant. It’s rich in protein, fiber and important minerals, ideally suits energy growth and doesn’t shake it up.

Now combine this with the soft, sponge-like texture of dokura with mustard seeds, transport leaves and sweet holidays of green peppers? You have a dish equal to a particular part of modern comfort and happiness. Plus, it’s steamed not fried. That’s a win-win in every sense.

Ingredients You’ll Need (Simple, Pantry-Friendly)

No exotic ingredients here just clean, basic staples you probably already have at home.

1 cup yellow moong dal (soaked for 3-4 hours)

2 tablespoons curd/yogurt

1 green chili (adjust to taste)

½ inch ginger piece

Salt to taste

1 teaspoon ENO fruit salt or baking soda

1 tablespoon lemon juice

For Tempering:

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

1-2 green chilies, slit

A pinch of asafoetida (hing)

A few fresh curry leaves

2 tablespoons water

Step-by-Step: How to Make Soft & Fluffy Moong Dal Dhokla

Soak and Blend

Start by soaking the moong dal for 3–4 hours or overnight. Drain the water and grind it into a smooth, thick batter with green chili, ginger, curd, and salt. Add a splash of water if needed but keep it thick.

Ferment (Optional But Awesome)

If you’ve got time, let the batter ferment for a few hours in a warm spot. It develops a richer taste and better texture. But if you’re short on time, don’t worry baking soda or ENO will do the trick.

Add the Rising Agent

Just before steaming, add ENO or baking soda along with lemon juice. Stir gently and quickly pour into a greased steaming dish.

Steam to Perfection

Steam for about 12–15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Don’t over-steam, or it’ll turn rubbery.

Cool and Slice

Let it cool for a few minutes before cutting into squares or diamonds. Patience pays off here it helps keep the texture intact.

Tempering: The Flavor Bomb on Top

This is where the magic happens. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a small pot. Add mustard seeds, sesame seeds, green peppers, curry leaves and leaves. As soon as he utters hist, pour evenly onto your Healthy Moong Dal Dhokla pieces. You can also drop small water to soften the crust and introduce flavor to the depths of the Healthy Moong Dal Dhokla.
